Go to Vondelpark this summer – Amsterdam’s most popular green space.  In the summer months there is a lot of free entertainment for all ages with an open-air theatre, top concerts and performances from the world of comedy, dance, music and kid’s theatre. There’s an open-air cinema outside the Film museum throughout the summer and Café Vertigo complements this with a beautiful outdoor terrace serving food all day. Het Blauwe Theehuis also has a popular terrace and is the place to be if you want to treat yourself to some alfresco tapas and a cold beer.

From June until the end of August, the festival line-up features modern dance on Friday evenings, kid’s theatre and jazz on Saturday afternoons, and comedy on Saturday evenings. Sunday is dedicated to music, first with the classical lunch-time concert series, followed by the popular Sunday afternoon line-up ranging from pop, rock, Dutch and world music. See the line-up at Vondelpark here.

You can get to Vondelpark with the trams 1, 2, 3, 5, 12 and 16 which stop along Van Baerlestraat, Overtoom, Amstelveenseweg streets and on Museumplein Square. Or you could stay in the neighbourhood and have the Vondelpark on your doorstep, also near the  Leisdseplein and the Museumquarter, in the Oud-Zuid area of Amsterdam.

Not far away from Vondelpark is the Museumquarter where you can find the Van Gogh museum which holds over 200 paintings and prints of Van Gogh’s greatest works, including other acclaimed artists.  Next to the Van Gogh is the Stedelijk Museum with a collection of modern art and has numerous exhibitions throughout the year. But the Rijksmuseum (Stadhouderskade 42 www.rijksmuseum.nl) is a vast building where you could easily spend a whole day, housing Dutch Masters, such as Vermeer’s The Kitchen Maid and Rembrandt’s Night Watch, plus a superb collection of other 17th century Dutch masters.

Behind the Rijksmuseum is a large area used for various events including the Uitmarkt cultural festival held every August. The museums can be reached with Tram 2 or 5 from the Spui or by the Museumboat.

The whole area is called the Oud-zuid of Amsterdam and includes the Leidseplein, which is a lively area with many clubs, bars and restaurants and only a five minute walk to the Vondelpark.  Below are some apartments in the area of Vondelpark, Leidseplein and the Museumquarter with 1 and 2 bedrooms some are large enough for a group of people and families, which makes it a cheaper option with a set price. Couples can also save if stay in a smaller apartment. Check here for apartments.
